Like the rest of Scandinavia, Greater Copenhagen is a welfare society

A cornerstone is free and equal rights to benefits such as healthcare and education for all citizens. The strong welfare state ensures economic equality in society and close to zero corruption, and studies consistently show that people in Greater Copenhagen are among the happiest people on the planet.

World's highest level of trust in others

Greater Copenhagen is a safe society built on trust. Trust between colleagues, neighbours, employers and employees, citizens and authorities, parents and children and between the people we meet in the streets.

We trust each other to such a degree, that mothers can leave their babies to sleep in their prams outside a café or shop. 'Who's watching the baby?' foreigners often ask. 'Everyone is watching the baby', we say.

Want to learn the language of the locals?

Danish is the official language of Denmark and in Sweden it is Swedish. But no need to worry if you speak neither. The level of English in Greater Copenhagen is excellent, and you will have no trouble getting by at work, in shops and socialising with the locals.

If you end up staying for a longer period – which we believe to be quite likely – learning the local language can be helpful.

Both Sweden and Denmark offer free language lessons for all newcomers. Most of the language schools offer both daytime and evening classes.

Located in the heart of Scandinavia

Greater Copenhagen spans Eastern Denmark and Southern Sweden. Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, and the Swedish city Malmö are the main cities in Greater Copenhagen, separated only by a short stretch of sea and with a bridge connecting the two cities by road and rail. Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and can be reached by train from the main station in Copenhagen in 30 minutes, making it very accessible for commuting.

Greater Copenhagen has excellent transport connections by metro, bus and train as well as outstanding infrastructure for cycling safely in and around the cities. Copenhagen Airport is the main international airport in the region, and from the centre of Copenhagen getting to the airport takes only 15 minutes by metro – which runs 24 hours. Trains are running from the airport across the bridge to Malmö and onwards to the rest of Skåne and Halland, the southernmost part of Sweden.

The capital of bicycles

Greater Copenhagen is most famous for its many bicycles and biking culture, which means that citizens ride their bikes to work no matter the weather forecast.

Every day, cyclists in the city of Copenhagen pedal 1.2 million kilometres, and on average each person in the city owns one bike. Around 80% of cyclists’ bike all through the winter, and the city has an effective policy to clear snow from bike paths even sooner than from roads. If you want to do like the Danes and Swedes, you can buy a bike in local bike shops, new or used.
